Overview

In today's commercial environment, establishing a framework for the authentication of computer-based information requires a familiarity with concepts and professional skills from both the legal and computer security fields.

Nowadays, most of the business communication and other legal compliances are primarily carried out via web. So, there is a possibility that these communications can be seen, altered or replaced by a third party with malicious intent.

So, in order to protect your electronic communications like email using a foolproof mechanism just like you protect paper-based messages like letters and memos by putting them in a sealed envelope or a file. You can achieve this by the use of Personal Digital Certificates issued by the Certified Authority.

Moreover, the Personal Digital Certificate also assures the identity of a person in the digital world and provides a means of associating the person with the electronic documents, similar to the association made in paper-based transactions using handwritten signatures.

What is a Digital Certificate?

Digital Certificates is a form of electronic credential for the internet. e.g. Just as a passport or a driver’s license is used to uniquely identify individual in the physical world, a Digital Certificate can be presented electronically to prove your identity or your right to access information or services on the Internet.

A digital certificate explicitly associates the identity of an Assessee/device with a pair of electronic keys - public and private keys - and this association is endorsed by the Certified Authority. The certificate contains information about a user's identity (for example, their name, email address, the date the certificate was issued and the name of the Certifying Authority that issued it).

You can use Digital Certificates for the following:

  1. To secure email and web-based transactions, or to identify other participants of web-based transactions.
  2. To prove ownership of a domain name and establish SSL / TLS encrypted secured sessions between your website and the user for web-based transactions.
  3. To sign web forms, e-tendering documents, filing income tax returns, to access membership based websites automatically without entering a user name and password, etc.

Why should I trust a Digital Certificate's contents?

Digital Certificates are endorsed by a Certifying Authority which is a trusted entity that is empowered by law to issue Digital Certificates in the same way as a driving license is endorsed by the relevant authority, namely, the Department of Transport.

The endorsement is done in the form of a difficult-to-forge signature or stamp of approval. The Certifying Authority is responsible for vetting all applications for Digital Certificates, and once satisfied, "stamps" its difficult-to-forge Digital Signature on all the Certificates it issues, attesting their validity.

The certifying authority on receipt of the application and corresponding supporting evidences and other particulars as required, can grant the DSC. Discretion is vested with the certifying authority to reject any application SNK ETAX Solutions Limited is a registered authority (RA) of TCS-CA who is a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) which is authorized by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Government of India, to issue legally valid Digital Certificates in India under the Indian IT Act 2000.
